1. College has a fully air conditioned library with an excellent
collection of latest books, monographs, journals, magazines and
newspapers. Students are permitted to borrow books from the
library. The library also provides photocopying facilities at a
nominal charge. The library is open between 8 am and 8 pm on all
working days of the week.
2. Medical Education Centre has modern computers, printers
(laser, inkjet, dot matrix), scanner, Internet and email
facilities. The computers are freely available to the students.
The MEC has MEDLINE Database (1966 to current) on CD Roms with
further access to the National Library of Medicine in USA
through the Internet. MEC also has television, VCR,
videocassettes and other electronic teaching materials on CD
Roms.
3. Common room for students with television and cable
connection, indoor games and entertainment.
4. Facilities are available for outdoor games and tournaments at
the adjacent Abahani playground. Sports and other extra
curricular activities are actively encouraged.
5. A good canteen for students is available in the campus.
6. College medical journal is published every six months and is
indexed with the Bangladesh Medical and Dental Council.
7. The College and Hospital have ambulances and microbus for
transporting patients and small groups of students. For larger
groups, the College arranges buses on a hiring system.
8. Students publish wall paper and annual magazine. Debates,
seminars and cultural events are held regularly.
Teaching methods
Teaching is imparted through lectures, demonstrations,
tutorials, ward clinics, practical classes, field visits, guided
study tour and surveys on health problems. Monthly clinical
meetings are held on a regular basis. Teaching aids such as
overhead projectors, slide projectors, multimedia projector,
television with VCR and Videocassettes, Computers with teaching
CD Roms are used in the teaching of students.
Student attendance
Student attendance is recorded in attendance registers.
Attendance is compulsory and students are liable for fines of
taka one hundred per day for failing to attend classes. Students
are eligible to appear in the Dhaka University Professional
Examinations only if they have 75% attendance in classes in the
respective subject. An academic calendar is provided to every
student to help him/ her understand the schedule for the year.
Every student is also assigned to a particular member of the
faculty for guidance with regard to individual problems.
Student assessment
Student assessments are made through periodic class examinations
(card completion, written, oral and practical examinations).
Promotion
1st year to 2nd year and 3rd year to 4th year: Students are
required to have 75% attendance in class. Secure 50% marks in
aggregate in the periodic examinations. Satisfactory behaviour
and conduct to be certified by the concerned heads of
departments.
2nd year to 3rd year and 4th year to 5th year Through Dhaka
University Professional Examinations
MBBS is awarded by the Dhaka University when students pass
all subjects of the final examination at the end of 5th year.
Internship
Students who have been awarded the MBBS degree by the Dhaka
University have to do one year of internship at the Bangladesh
Medical College Hospital for full registration with the
Bangladesh Medical and Dental Council. Interns spend a
compulsory 6 months in the Department of Medicine and 6 months
either in the Department of Surgery or Obstetrics/ Gynaecology.
During this period, every intern is paid a monthly allowance.
THE HOSPITAL
Bangladesh Medical College Hospital is a 500 bed acute tertiary
care medical facility and provides excellent medical, surgical,
obstetrics and gynaecological services. The recently
commissioned CWHCC building has been constructed to
international standards. Modern diagnostic facilities are
available and the Hospital continues to acquire sophisticated
medical equipment. Renowned specialists, highly skilled nursing
and support staff contribute to the reputation of this hospital
as a Medical Centre of Excellence. BMCH has about 150 doctors
and at least 100 junior doctors (interns) working in various
departments.
